  • Date: Tuesday, Nov. 19
  • Time: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Location: Zoom

Please join us for our third USG Science of Reading Higher Education Consortium Professional Learning session on “Demystifying Data in Teacher Preparation: Using Screening, Diagnostics, and Progress Monitoring to Support Literacy Practice.” We are pleased to host Brennan Chandler from Georgia State University to lead this informative talk.

Teacher educators play a critical role in preparing pre-service teachers and supporting in-service educators to make sense of student assessment data. Yet, data often feels opaque or overly technical, leading to uncertainty about how to use it effectively in classrooms. This session will demystify the different types of assessments—screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring—with an emphasis on how to teach and model their use in both preparation programs and professional learning settings. We will connect these practices to House Bill 307 and highlight why a clear understanding of assessment purposes is essential for effective data-based decision making. Participants will leave with an understanding of the different types of data, the questions they answer, and their use in classroom practice.

Brennan Chandler is an assistant professor of dyslexia at Georgia State University and coordinator of the graduate dyslexia endorsement program. His research examines instructional mechanisms that enhance word learning and bridges intervention development with implementation science to improve literacy outcomes for students with reading difficulties, including dyslexia.
