Streamlined IRB process updates: February 2026
UGA’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) announced important changes to exempt research oversight as part of ongoing efforts to streamline processes and reduce burden. These changes are estimated to save researchers and office staff a combined 700 hours over the course of one year.
The following submissions are no longer required for research that is eligible for exemption from regulatory requirements:
- Study team modifications: PIs can simply add a “note-to-file” via the “Public Comment” activity in the IRB portal to document personnel changes. The PI is responsible for tracking training records to ensure all study personnel have current, appropriate training.
- Post-approval self-assessments: PIs must review the IRB correspondence upon initial approval and address any policy requirements. Notes-to-file describing the changes made (or providing revised materials) are recommended and can be submitted via the “Public Comment” activity.
- Study closures for projects ongoing for more than one year: PIs can create and submit closures, but a note-to-file via “Public Comment” is sufficient. The PI can also create a progress report to notify the HRPP that the study is ready to close.
